Stage Fright Blitz ebook

While singing can be stressful, there are some easy methods for singers to be fully prepared for their performance and overcome their stage fright.  Start by really knowing your performance, specifically your lyrics, and then be sure to maintain your voice quality, both through coaching practice as well as physical preparation.

Stage fright can leave many singers disoriented and searching for the lyrics they thought they knew.  Many experts say that you don’t know your performance well enough unless you can perform it under any circumstance at any time.  While this might sound extreme, it is a sure-fire way to calm your fears about messing up your act or forgetting your lyrics.  But what does it take to be able to perform anywhere, anytime?  Try some, or all, or these practice techniques to help you get there.  Before you know your performance, you should be able to sing it perfectly just after waking up in the middle of the night and in front of any audience.

  • Create a practice tape of you performing your song and listen to it over and over again.  Just make sure that you perform it correctly on your tape.
  • Try to repeat the lyrics out loud, either singing them or saying them, while doing other tasks.  Practice the lyrics while doing the dishes, washing the car, walking to work, or any other similar task.
  • Write down the lyrics on a blank sheet of paper.  See if you can do it without looking at the original lyrics.

In addition to really knowing your performance, singers must also take care of their voice.  In order to obtain excellent voice control, consider taking voice lessons from a professional voice coach.  They can teach you how to control your breathing, the level of the voice, and how to control the vibrato in your voice.

Maintaining voice quality also requires maintaining your physical condition as well.  Keep your vocal cords well lubricated by drinking as much water as possible during the three days prior to your performance.  Many singers also will refrain from using their voice – practicing or talking – on the day of the performance.  To prevent a common cold from hurting your voice on performance day, maintain your immune system, particularly in the two weeks prior to the performance.  Staying well rested and having plenty of Vitamin C in your diet can work wonders for preventing the common house cold.
