Stage Fright Blitz ebook

Overcoming stage fright can be difficult, but with these six strategies, you will be well on your way to an amazing performance.  To really get the most out of these strategies, you will need to practice them and keep reminding yourself that you can do it with these six strategies to help.  So, to make these easier to remember, just “Practice what you PREACH”

Practice Relax, Expert help, Audience, Confidence, Healthy

PRACTICE
What it’s all about:  It’s not enough to just practice a couple times and think that you know your performance or speech well enough.  You need to know it so well that you can perform it under any conditions – that way you won’t have to worry about forgetting key parts or stumbling during a performance.  The only way to know your performance that well is to practice, practice, and then practice some more.
Put it into action:  There are many different tips for how to practice, but the bottom line is that you need to put in the effort to practice more than you have been in the past.  Often, the first part of your performance is when you will be feeling the majority of the stage fright effects, so practice the first section of your performance the most.  An easy way to do this is to always start at the beginning when practicing.

RELAX
What it’s all about:  When you experience stage fright, it is often due to having excess adrenaline in your body due to excess stress.  To reduce the stress and occurrence of stage fright, take some time before your performance to relax and fight against the onset of stage fright.
Put it into action:  Yoga and meditation are two of the most common relaxation techniques – sign up for a course or rent a DVD to practice.  To stay calm before a performance, it also helps to show up early so that you won’t be stressed about being late.  Another helpful technique is to practice controlling your breathing since breath control can actually relax your entire body.

EXPERT HELP
What it’s all about:  Just like professional athletes have coaches, performers should also have personal coaches.  A coach can provide you with individualized tips for both your performance as well as for overcoming your stage fright.
Put it into action:  Depending on your type of performance, choose the coach that is best for you.  For most performers, a voice coach is the best choice – whether you are singing or speaking.  If you perform music, then get a coach that specializes in your instrument as well as in performance coaching.

AUDIENCE
What it’s all about:  A good performer learns how to use the audience to their best advantage.  If you can, you should feed off of the audience’s energy to boost your own performance and eliminate stage fright.  If not, visualize the audience in a manner that makes them less frightening.
Put it into action:  Figure out who you are not nervous performing in front of, whether it is your parents, a group of stranger, or a group of infants and toddlers.  Then, visualize the audience as this group – by doing this, you will not be as worried about how they are reacting.

CONFIDENCE
What it’s all about:  Having confidence in your abilities to perform is the most surefire way to overcome stage fright.  While gaining confidence is a long process, there are some methods for achieving the same results quicker by using visualization and just plain “faking it”.
Put it into action:  If you have the confidence – great, just use it!  If not, try one of these techniques.  Before the show, close your eyes and imagine the show going perfectly.  Picture every little detail.  Repeat this exercise often.  On the night of the actual show, act like you have confidence and some of it will rub off and help you perform better.

HEALTHY
What it’s all about: Often stage fright is its worst when we are tired, run-down, and generally not healthy.  By maintaining good overall health, you will be able to alleviate many of the effects of stage fright from impacting you.
Put it into action:  To stay healthy, there are just a couple simple things you need to remember.  Drink plenty of water.  Get the right amount of sleep.  Eat healthy choices and take vitamins to supplement anything you aren’t getting in your diet.
